Setting up Discord

Discord can be a bit tricky to setup as it requires a 'bot token' . These aren't that hard to obtain, but they can be a bit frustrating if not done correctly.

  • Firstly, create yourself a private room. You don't want these alerts going public, get the room in your channel, and invite staff into it to take care of this
  • Now, that you've done this, it's time to head on over to discord and create the bot . The link will take you to the developer portal where you can create a new bot
  • Next, give your bot a name, a description and an icon. These just make it a bit easier to identify the bot you're dealing with
  • Next, hit 'save changes'
  • Now, on the left side of the screen, you'll see a "bot" link. Click that, then click on 'add bot'
  • When you see the 'A Wild Bot has appeared' message, click the 'copy' button underneath the token heading . Paste that token into an empty text file, temporarily
  • Next, click on 'Oauth2' , again on the left menu
  • There, you can select 'bot' from the middle column. Don't click that 'copy link' yet button though
  • Scroll down to 'permissions' and give the bot the appropriate permissions. You should give it Administrator, Send Messages, Read Messages History, Embed URL at the very minimum
  • Now, go up and click the 'copy URL' button, and visit it in a browser
  • Select the 'server' to add your bot to
  • Verify the permissions are correct
  • Click on 'authorize'
  • You're good to go
